Scrumptious Moment - Valentine’s Day 2020

Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays - candy, flowers, romantic comedies, comfort meals - what more could a person want? And even though I am not big on chocolate (blasphemy, I know), I do LOVE red velvet. For this Valentine’s Day, I decided to try my hand at these Red Velvet & White Chocolate Brownies… and they have become of my new favorite recipes!

RED VELVET & WHITE CHOCOLATE BROWNIES

It’s Valentine’s Day, and that means it’s time to indulge in all things red velvet. These Red Velvet and White Chocolate Brownies bring together the best of both worlds, combining the rich, gooey texture of your favorite brownies with the decadent flavor of red velvet cake. With their beautiful deep color and dense, satisfying texture, these brownies are as stunning as they are delicious!

WHAT IS RED VELVET?

We have all had a “red velvet” something, but what actually is it? Red velvet, which is often in the form of a cake, is a popular dessert in the South, made with mostly a vanilla base, a subtle hint of cocoa powder, and vibrant red food coloring. The red velvet cake traces back to the Victorian era, where vinegar was used to tenderize the cake before the invention of cake flour. When this was mixed with cocoa powder, a unique red hue would result, which eventually led to the introduction of red food coloring to maintain the iconic color of the dessert. Red velvet desserts are usually paired with a tangy cream cheese frosting.

INGREDIENT AND BAKING NOTES

To make these Red Velvet and White Chocolate Brownies, the wet ingredients will include melted salted butter, granulated sugar, egg and egg yolk, red food coloring, and vanilla extract. For the dry ingredients, you will need all-purpose flour, baking powder, and unsweetened cocoa powder. The final touch is a chopped Ghirardelli white chocolate bar.

Preheat your oven to 350°F and line an 8x8 pan with parchment paper. In a small bowl, whisk together cocoa powder, flour, and baking powder. In a larger bowl, mix melted butter, egg, egg yolk, red food coloring, and vanilla until combined. Gradually stir in the dry ingredients, then fold in chopped white chocolate.

Pour the batter into the pan and spread evenly. Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown (the center can be slightly undercooked). Once cooled, use a sharp knife (run it under hot water and dry it) to cut into squares for clean edges. See below for more details on how to make this decadent dessert!
